Below are some pictures of a disassembled Manual Lever Position Sensor
(MLPS) from a ford crown victoria. This is an early mlps sensor for
92-97 crownvics prior to the intoduction on the DTR digital
transmission range setup introduced in the 1998 model year.
Here's the mlps sensor with the rivets drilled out and the cover lifted
off
This sensor sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) to
tell it which gear the vehicle operator has selected with the steering
column shift lever. It also controls the reverse backup lighting and
inhibits the starter motor from cranking in gear positions other than
park or neutral.
